NASU Holds Emergency meeting Today
The Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) in a letter on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, summoned its Branch Chairmen to what it termed an ‘emergency meeting. The meeting fixed for Friday, August 19, 2022, will hold in Abuja.
HOPE may be in sight for staff and students of striking varsities, as the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has disclosed that five of the university-based unions may likely call off their strike within the next one week, while that of ASUU remains uncertain.
The Minister made this known on Thursday, August 18, 2022, during the weekly Ministerial Briefing in Abuja. Recall that ASUU had embarked on strike in February 2022, with other University-based unions following suit, and the affected Universities have remained shut ever since.
The Minister, however, insisted that he will not succumb to ASUU’s demand for their members to be paid the backlog of salaries withheld within the period of six months that they were on strike, noting that it is the penalty for their action.

Adamu argued that in spite of the #2.5 trillion expended on education by President Buhari’s administration through the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) as well as Universal Basic Education (UBEC), surpassing the #1.2 trillion demanded by ASUU, lecturers have maintained their position to embark on a needless strike.
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) in a letter on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, summoned its Branch Chairmen to what it termed an ‘emergency meeting. The meeting fixed for Friday, August 19, 2022, will hold in Abuja.
It is, however, unknown if the meeting would be to suspend the strike action of the union which is now in its fifth month.
